2)     Happiness is a favor from Allaah He grants Whomever He wants.

First Khutbah


I advise you and myself to be conscious and fearful of Allah. Fear him and worship him and spend from what has been entrusted to you, and do not mix truth with falsehood, and do not conceal the truth while you know, and do good and prostrate to your Lord and bow in worship in obedience with those who bow.


How few are the people who know happiness and peace of mind. Among these few are little who value it, and if we look closely at some of them, we would realize the truth in them is little, surrounded by a lot of falsehood. Like a star almost losing its light from the darkness of the night. Many are the calamities that befall us, that fill our horizon with thundering clouds. How often is it that one of us faces things that he does not like when he is deprived from something that he desires and here comes the role of happiness, that chases despair away, and acceptance that negates rebellious. Happiness that goes as a human being wherever he moves to, and settles when he settles is buried with him in his grave.


Is the happiness, that Sheikh Al Islam Ibn Taymiyah Rahimu Allah, is described at the peak of his feelings, he said:" What can my enemies do to harm me? Will they imprison me? At privacy and solitude, and if they kill e, then I am a martyr, (Shaheed), and if they expel me, then its traveling for the sake of Allah. Happiness and misery is something that will remain as long as life continues. Each human being on the surface of earth is aggressively searching for happiness, and hoping to attain it at the expense of all that he owns.


Some people, who are deluded and deceived, find happiness to be something that has no reality to it, nothing but an imagination, invented from deception that has no reality. The truth is, O Servants of Allah, that such people are ignorant, and deceivers because, it is impossible that, Allah created us to be miserable.


Allah says to His Prophet (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam), which translates as:  "Taha, we have not sent down to you The Qur'an that you be distressed or miserable"(Ta Ha: 1- 2). In addition Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala says which translates as: "And if they should come to you for guidance from me, then, whoever follows my guidance will neither go astray in the world nor suffer in the hereafter" (Ta Ha: 123).


Happiness, O Servants of Allah, is the paradise of dreams. Let all mankind seek to attain, educate it at the highest level of intelligence to a simple minded, nave person. And, from a ruler in a huge castle or mansion to a poor person in a small cell, living in dust with poverty.


We dont think that any of them deliberately look for misery and distress for himself, nor accept that to happen to himself.


O Muslims, a servant without faith is a weak creation. In this weakness, when he is inflicted with harm, he gives up in despair. If he receives good, he becomes miserly. In both situations, he is worried and fearful.


As Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala says which translates as: "Indeed mankind was created anxious, when evil touches him in patient, and when good touches him withholding of it except the observers of prayers"(Al-Maarij: 19-22).


When a person loses happiness in the heart it is replaced with worry and emotional disturbance. Four monsters gather against him to destroy and weaken him, besides the fact that happiness and peace of mind is lost. These four are grief, sadness, worry, and staying up at night. There is nothing more difficult than the effect of grief in the life of a servant. Since he is a soldier from the soldiers of Allah, He uses it against whomever he wishes from his servants, from those who have weak connections with Allah. Weak spiritually by being, immersed in disobedience and sins. As Allah says which translates as: "And to Allah belongs the soldiers of the heavens and the earth, and ever is Allah is exalted in might and wise"(Al-Fath: 7). Ali ibn Abutalib Radhi Allahu Anhu was asked: "Which is mightiest of the strongest of the soldiers of Allah. Are they the mountains? Mountains could be broken by metals. So metals are stronger. And fire melts metals, so fire is stronger. And water puts out fire, so water is stronger. And clouds carry water, so the clouds are stronger. And winds send the clouds, so the wind is stronger. And the human being stops the wind or prevents it with his hands and his dress, so the human being is stronger. And sleepiness overcomes the human being, so sleepiness is stronger. And grief overcomes sleepiness, so the strongest of the soldiers of Allah is grief. He gives it power over whomever he wishes, from his servants".


So, the fact is, then, O Servants of Allah, that happiness and tranquility and peace of mind is a favor from Allah.


Mercy, just like Grief and Worry, as Stress and Anger, is from Allah as a test. Two people could be with similar physical appearances, but they have great differences between them, as the differences between heavens and earth.


At the time of hardship, when matters become serious, when the difference, great difference appears between a happy person who could be envied, and a person at despair, who is afraid, if you see him ask him to seek refuge from Allah from his situation and position. And, Allah mentions such a thing in his book.  Regarding the battle of Uhud. When He made the believers go to sleep, and the battle is about to start in a few hours. As He says which translates as: "Ten after distress, He sent down upon you security in the form of sleepiness overcoming a faction of you. The sleepiness in such a situation is a proof of peace and tranquility and security or those who are firm that Allah will give victory to his messenger and fulfill his promise, and make his hope and wish come true" (Aal-Imran: 154).


Thats why Allah says regarding the other group, in the same verse, while another faction is worried about themselves, thinking of Allah other than the truth.


The thought of ignorance, saying: "Is there anything for us to have done in this matter," meaning, from Worry, Fear and Despair, this was their situation. This is the situation of the people of doubt. They live between "Buts" and "Ifs". And I wish in sorrow and regret.

Servants of Allah, happiness is a phrase that a lot of people are mistaken in defining it and explaining it, nor do they agree on that definition. So, they start from their imagination, thinking of what it could be, but without success. So, they became as a person seeking to find pearls in a desert, exhausted in body, sad, loosing hope.


The rich amongst them, thinks that happiness is, his health and wealth in real estate. And the poor of them, thinks, that it is in gaining more money, garments and wealth. And the politician of them, thinks that it is, achieving his goals and the smartness of making injustice appear like justice. And, the one in love, thinks that, happiness is the reunion with his beloved one and infatuation and for such and such person it is something different and so on.


The just person and the inspired one, O Servants of Allah, look in with insight, knows certainly the silliness and absurdity of these guesses. And the big gap and whole of illusion that therein, because, the wealthy will realize that this mansion of his with his illusive happiness is being shared by his servants and followers and perhaps the watchdogs. So, he realizes that, the happiness is not in that mansion. And then, the poor, the exhausted looks at the people of wealth with this artificial happiness as though its a reflection of light over a cloud that soon will depart and disappear and then says to himself, this cotton that they wear was in a forest, on trees. And the silk they show-off with was in the stomach of worms.


As for the jewelry that they wear, it was inside a rock that was carried by a donkey or a mule and realizes then that true happiness resembles in a personality like Umar Radhi Allahu Anhu, when he was wearing a garment with pouches in it, and was eating oil and was leaving in a hut-like cottage, and with all of that Qisraa was shaken on his throne out of fear from him, as well as the kings of Rome. So, the reality of happiness may Allah preserve you, is not in excessive wealth nor is it in power and position nor is it in large numbers of children nor is it in politics.


Happiness is not something that is measured by quantity nor could it be bought by currency, and no human possesses it to sale it, nor can they take it away from one who attained it or was granted it. Happiness is, faith followed by action, sacrifice and forcing oneself to things that it does not like and to persevere and put up with hardships and difficulties and training the self to face adversities and calamities and hardships with patients. And the happy one is the one who favors the last thing eternal over the vanishing and perishing.


As Allah says which translates as: "Indeed those who have believed and done righteous deeds, the most merciful will appoint for them affection"(Mariam: 96).


And in another verse, Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala says which translates as: "That is so, and whoever honors the symbol of Allah, indeed it is from the piety of the hearts" (Al-Hajj: 32).


Happiness, Oh! Muslims, is accepting Allah and satisfaction with his decree, and trusting Allah and seeking support and aid from him, and whoever tastes faith tastes happiness.

The Prophet (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) said, as in the Hadith Sahih Imam Muslim: "You will find the tastes of faith, he who accepts Allah, his Lord, Islam as his faith, and Muhammad (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) as his messenger, that's why whoever looses or waists the bounty of "Ribbaa" which is acceptance, becomes greedy and stingy, and will never be satisfied. And collects, but he does not pay, and will eat as the cattle eats, and will drink like thirsty camels. And the truth is, what the messenger (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) said as in the book of Imam Tirmidhi when he said : "From the happiness of the son of Adam is that he accepts what Allah decrees, and the misery of the son of Adam is that he rejects, and rebels against what Allah decrees.


Al Farooq Umar Radhiallahu Anhu wrote to Abu Musa Ashari Radhiallahu Anhuma saying: "All good lies in acceptance and satisfaction, so if you can, then accept and be satisfied (i.e. with a decree), or other wise persevere. Then, servants of Allah, do not fear grief and worry, and sadness as long as your matter is according to what Allah said in "Qudsi" Hadith Bukhari and Muslim: "I will be what my servant thinks of me, and I am with him when he remembers me, and when he remembers me alone, I remember him alone, and if he remembers me or mentions me in a group I will mention him in a group better than that".

With such a Hadith and others like it, happiness, fear on the faces of the happy ones, happiness that was expressed by those who felt it's joy from the leaders of Islam who said: " We feel happiness that if kings know it's extent, and the children of kings, they will lash us and fight us over it with swords".


Happiness, is described by those who lived through it by saying: "At times I think to myself saying: "If the people of paradise go through or live like I am right now, then indeed they live in a kind life, and a happy life".


Such are those who smile for life without frown from their faces and receive pain with satisfaction and submission and change it into a favor, which deserves to be thanked, and deserve gratitude. While for others its disaster, which deserves weeping and crying.


So if happiness was a tree that grows in the human soul, then the faith in Allah, his angles, his messengers, and the hereafter and the decree of Allah, good or bad of it, is its water, and food, and air and light.


Allah says which translates as: "Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah, unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah, their hearts are assured. Those who have believed and done righteous deed, a good state is theirs, and a good return (Ar-Rad: 28-29).


Second Sermon


Fear Allah, O Servants of Allah, and know that the knowledge that enlightens, and guides and determination that encourages and elevates a person, in reality is nothing but a key to the ranks of happiness and success, and these ranks are usually risks from the servants for the lack of these two things or one of them. So it is either he does not have knowledge about it, so he is not motivated to seek it, or he does not have knowledge about it, so he will not initiate or have the determination to attain it.


Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala says which translates as: "And when you have decided then rely upon Allah.  Indeed Allah loves those who rely upon him"(Aal-Imran: 159).


Know, servants of Allah, that losing happiness comes from those  "Or" gates that must be shut and sealed and must be recognized and known and understood.


Among the reasons that will make a person lose happiness is music, the trumpet of Shaytan, an introduction to fornication and adultery. It causes hypocrisy and worry to grow in the heart, just like water causes plants to grow.


Allah, Subhanahu Wa Taala says which translates as: "And of the people is he who buys the amusement of speech, to miss lead others from the way of Allah"(Luqman: 6).


Ibn Masoud Radhi Allah Anhu swore by Allah three times that this was music. Things that would destroy happiness is making the Muslim house a dwelling for Jinnis, Kufar Jinnis and isolating, and pushing away angles. This happens by spreading and hanging pictures that Allah has made forbidden on the walls, and on the corridors.


The Prophet (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) said: "Angles do not enter a house that has a dog or picture" So why is it there are many people close the doors and shut it for angles not to enter and they get or invite reasons of misery and worry while they are seeking happiness after that.


Servants of Allah, ways and doors to misery are sins and wrong doings, which the Prophet (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) said: "The servants might be deprived from his sustenance because of a sin   that he commits".


As mentioned in the book of Imam Ahmad: "It was found in the treasury of Bani Umaya, wheat, the grain of which is the size of the seed inside the date and it was put in a cloth bag  written on it from outside,  This is how plants use to grow at the time when there was justice ".


That is why, servants of Allah, happiness of the heart that is the result of blessed sustenance is directly related to obedience and piety.


In the book of Imam Muslim, in the description of the awaited Mahdi, the Prophet (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) said: "He will establish Deen, the religion that Allah sent his Messenger with, and the earth will bring out its blessings, and it will go back as it was before, so much so that a group of people will all gather to eat from one pomegranate and sit under the shade of its leaf. A mule will carry one bunch of grapes".


Reasons that could result in worry O Muslims, is negligence of Salaah and belittling its importance.


The Messenger of Allah (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) said in the books of Imam Ahmad and Nisai, He said (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam): "The light of my eye is in prayer".


In the books of Imam Ahmad and Abu Dawood, he (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) was described, that whenever something disturbed him, he initiated a prayer.


Neglecting the remembrance of Allah, supplications and asking the forgiveness are also   reasons for misery, sadness and grief. For that, the one who is seeking happiness must not neglect nor be heedless regarding this important matter. He must hold on to it.


Always remember the saying of the Prophet (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) as in the book of Al Imam Dawood and Nisai: "Whoever continuously asks the forgiveness of Allah, Allah makes a way out from every grief, and He will provide him and sustain him in places he does not suspect".


One day the Prophet (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) entered the Masjid and He saw a man of the Ansar, called Abu Umaamah.  So, He said: "Abu Umaamah, why do I see you sitting in the Masjid when it is not time for prayer? " He said: "Grief and debts on me, O Messenger of Allah". He said:" Shall I teach you words that if you should say, Allah will release you from your grief, and pay off your debts ". I said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah". He said: "Every morning and in the evening say, O Allah I ask refuge in you from grief and sorrow and I ask refuge in you in disability and laziness, and ask refuge in Allah from cowardliness and stinginess, and I ask refuge in you to be overwhelmed by debts and over the control of men". And Abu Umaamah said:" I did that and Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala relieved me from my grief and paid off my debts". This Hadith is in the book of Abu Dawood.
